I still remember the scene from Sex in the City where Carrie and Co. check out the hottest new restaurant to open in New York. The catch was that everything in the restaurant was “raw”—a health craze that seemed to be cropping up everywhere. Well, needless to say, the ladies were not exactly impressed. It is probably the reaction most people would have, including me. However, when a new raw-food cafe opened up in my town, a decided I should at least give it a try.
The menu was small, and was divided into three sections: juice, smoothies, and entrees. Just to make sure I had the concept correct, I quizzed the owner as I perused the offerings. “So, you don’t have any stoves or any ovens in here?”
“None.” Hmmmm. “So everything is really raw? And vegan? And gluten-free?” He said they were actually vegetarian because honey was used in a few dishes, but yes, it was all raw and all gluten-free. I asked for a few suggestions and decided upon a seed and nut “burger” with a side of “potato salad”–which was actually made from raw zucchini–and “onion rings”. I had no idea what to expect.
Well, I am happy (and pleasantly surprised) to report that everything was absolutely delicious. The burger was indeed nutty, but somehow moist and tasty, not dry like I expected it to be. It was served on gluten-free cracker-bread, which I expected to taste like cardboard but was also pretty tasty. The zuchini salad was dressed in a mustardy sauce with a little zing, and was delicious. The onion rings, which I determined were in fact dehydrated onions (not cooked, of course), were coated in some kind of semi-crunchy crumbs and were really excellent. After a friend told me about the McDonald’s lunch he’d just injested, I bragged about how ridiculously healthy MY lunch had been. It was filling, delicious, and yes, super healthy. I may just be joining the raw food revolution too! Okay, maybe not, but I’ll definitely be heading back to this cafe soon.
